Employers in Marketing, Finance, Economics, and Business will definitely hire an accounting major because they know accounting majors have such a diverse knowledge of the business world. This does not work the other way around however! For example, if you are a major in marketing, you won’t be able to get a job doing accounting, which then limits your job search when you are ready to graduate.

Now that you have decided you want to be an accounting major in college, the entire world of business is at your fingertips! The key to getting a good job in accounting, and having a leg up on other accounting majors, is taking a co-op or internship. An internship allows you to work part-time for an accounting firm while still taking classes. You can earn college credits for taking an internship, and you will get credit usually for one class by taking an internship. A co-op allows you to work full-time for an accounting firm, preferably during tax season, where you do not take classes and are committed to the accounting firm for an entire semester. The good thing is that both internships and co-ops in accounting are almost always paid positions! Other majors usually won’t pay you for taking a co-op or internship because they know you are receiving college credits by working for them. All accounting firms who are hiring students as soon as they graduate from college usually require that their prospective employees have completed either a co-op or internship during school. If you graduate in accounting without having completed a co-op or internship, you are at a severe disadvantage to those who have completed a co-op or internship.

Employers usually require their prospects to have completed a co-op or internship because when taking a co-op or internship while still in school, you can really get a grasp on how an accounting firm works and how they earn their money. Co-ops and internships break students in and eliminate the rustiness first-time accountants face when they first enter the field. Usually three to six months into taking a co-op or internship with an accounting firm, a light bulb goes off in the student’s head, and they gain great knowledge and understanding about what they are doing and how an accounting firm works. Then, when an accounting student graduates and starts working in the real world, this “rust” is gone because they already have worked for an accounting firm and understand what is going on. Compared to an accounting student who hasn’t completed an internship or co-op, a student who has completed an internship or co-op is more effective and quicker and more accurate when they first start working. Employers don’t want to have to deal with students who haven’t taken a co-op or internship because they are “rusty” when they first start and are less efficient than students who have taken a co-op or internship.

So if you are just entering college and would like to enter the business field, do yourself a favor and choose accounting! Even if you graduate in accounting and decide it isn’t what you want to do with your life, you can still enter any other business field. Also, if you want to have a significant advantage over other accounting students, take a co-op or internship during your junior or senior year. Many times the firm you took the co-op or internship with will extend a job offer to you for when you graduate school. Then you can feel confident when you go back to college, and you won’t have to worry about finding a job and competing with other students from your school! Good Luck!

Doing the Ccna Certification Exam With No Experience? You May Get Your Head Bitten Off!

Thinking of sitting for the CCNA certification exam but have no real world experience? Beware what you say in forums. This has been a hot topic on more than one occasion. There are those that will bit your head off if you innocently ask and those that will bit the heads off those that bite your head off! So what should you do? Let’s look at both arguments..

Go for it!! these are their arguments..

Knowledge is never a bad thing

It’s a catch 22. You don’t certify – you don’t get the job. You show you are overqualified, you don’t get the job anyway.

I know of alot of people have used the CCNA to make a career change

You are free to study for the CCNA certification exam and you are free to try and get a job out of it. Neither will be easy but it has been done before.

Don’t even attempt it!! these are their arguments..

You should have at least a year experience with Cisco kits before doing the exam

It can work against you in the interview if you are showing you have certs way above your experience

You should start with the A+, Network+, MCDST then get real world experience then attempt other exams.

Look into the CCENT first before doing the CCNA certification exam

Don’t do the CCENT first because even that is advanced for a beginner. Go for your network+ first after you complete your A+

I don’t know of anyone that has gotten their first job with just the CCNA certification exam cert.

Confused yet???

I would be if I were a newbie. Here is a few more points to consider and perhaps clear things up a bit…

Certs teach you new technologies. Learning is always a good thing. If you want to do a cert, go or it

we choose what we write on our resumes. If you think you have a cert that will go against you for a particular job, then don’t write you have it!!

listen to those above your experience but always use your own judgment.

its true that getting a higher cert most times will work against you in an interview if you don’t have the experience. Especially when you are going for an entry job. It can show you are overqualified and employers won’t feel confident that you will stay with them too long. But on the other hand, its shows you are proactive and seeking to learn new things. Use your judgement what you will say in the interview.

I wouldn’t just jump straight into a high cert before doing any of the basic knowledge ones first.

If you are set on doing a particular cert which is way above your experience level, well you can always try for it and if you find that you can’t do it, leave it for later.

You can always reword your resume to state that you just love a particular technology and hence that’s why you did the cert but you have no any real world experience as yet.

truth is, its hard to gain experience in a company so you can get the cert later.

Getting certified in a particular technology is fine if you just love it. But going for a higher cert thinking you will make lots of money is just naive thinking

So use your own judgment. Don’t go overboard with certs but at the same time, don’t feel restricted in what you should or shouldn’t learn.

Today, we are in a service or intellectual age. Our success happens in the quality of our employees’ interaction with our customers; this cannot be mandated through standard job description because each service event is different and unique. Standard service responses do not work; instead, employees must be constantly thinking and inventing to inspire customer loyalty. The more the job is built around the strengths of each employee, the more engaged and competent employees feel. The greater these feelings, the more connected employees are to their work and to customers. The result is a significant improvement in performance. Customization is the key to employee commitment and performance.

Think of a standard job description in today’s age of customization as a shirt or a coat that doesn’t fit well…it is uncomfortable. This creates an entirely new job description, customized for both the employee and the environment. Which employee would find it engaging to assess and propose a change to business hours, develop an on-line commerce site, attend a trade show, teach a course to other employees or re-organize a section of retail or office space?
