The American economic crisis has been making headlines all over the world for a few months but the US is not alone when it comes to financial difficulties. The UK has also been having serious economic troubles as well, especially in the housing industry. There has been a twelve percent drop in the price of homes in the UK in the last twelve months. So far evidence shows that the fallout from the economy has not affected the heating and plumbing industry as initially feared. Although there are reports of sales drops, there are still many companies reporting that sales are steady. The only major change seems to be the type of jobs undertaken by the engineers.

Up to last year, when the housing market was on an upswing, many heating and plumbing engineers were hired to create completely new plumbing and heating or cooling systems. In many ways, a new house and would often lead to completely new plumbing and heating system to be designed and installed. Now that the housing market has slowed down, home owners are more concerned with making sure their current systems will last as long as possible, while keeping costs down.

In recent months professional heating and plumbing engineers are being hired to undertake renovations and repairs to kitchens and bathrooms, as well as necessary refurbishments of cooling and heating systems. While on such jobs, the plumbers and heating engineers spend most of their billable time ensuring that a home's vents and drains are working correctly and carrying out replacements and repairs for water systems such as hot water cylinders and older boilers.

It is clear that the UK economy is having a rough ride right now but the professional heating and plumbing industry should remain fairly stable thanks to repair and renovation requests. Plumbers and heating specialists will also do well if they are ready to take on clients who want "green" technologies to heat their houses and their domestic water. Flexibility and ability to adjust to the circumstances guarantee that professionals will be able to get through the current economic crisis.

How does geothermal energy work is a good query, and one which I have frequently been asked. In this article I must first explain what it is, and then how it can be made to work for man.

Geothermal energy is, literally, the heat of the earth. The heat itself derives from radioactive rot underneath the earth's surface and, in certain locations, it is concentrated enough and is close enough to surface waters to be brought to the surface by local geological features.

It's a green energy source as the hot water which conveys it is replenished by rainfall and the heat it brings with it is continuously produced within the earth.

So, geothermal energy is the power which can be generated by the harnessing of the heat underneath the Earth's surface.

Geothermal heat comes from the magma in the earth's core, and that itself is heated by the radioactive rot of uranium, thorium, and potassium present in the core.

Though the resource is thermal energy rather than a physical substance such as gold or coal, many sides of geothermal energy are analogous to traits of mineral and fossil-fuel resources.

The water is heated, and the heat makes it more possible for alligators, tropical fish, and other types of fish to grow in seasons and places where they would not normally.

There are some constraints to it as a type of energy. Unfortunately, the best geothermal resources are concentrated in locations of volcanic activity and are not widely distributed. The earth's cent 1000 re is a distance of roughly four thousand miles from the surface and is so hot that it is molten, but when the heat does not rise to the surface it is too far to drill down to the center.

When used in a power station geothermal heat from the hot water from the well causes a 'secondary fluid' to turn into vapor, which as it expands drives the turbines to provide electricity. After turning the turbine generator, the working fluid is condensed into liquid, which is frequently vaporised by the geothermal heat in a continuing cycle.

Dry steam and flash steam power plants do emit low levels of carbon-dioxide, nitric oxide, and sulfur, although allegedly at only approximately 5% of the levels emitted by fossil fuel power plants. However geothermal plants can be built with emissions-controlling systems that may inject these substances back into the earth, thus reducing carbon emissions reportedly to less than 0.1% of those from fossil fuel power plants.

Dry steam plants are used when the rock is terribly hot. Flash plants take hot water, usually under pressure and at temperatures over two times the normal boiling point of water, out of the ground. They allow it to boil as it rises to the surface then separates the steam phase in steam / water separators and then run the steam thru a turbine. The turbine also turns a generator, and from that comes the electrical power.

Historically these waters have seen some application in spas and healing baths, but might also be developed for geothermal winter heating if used with heat pumps.

Recently, it's been said that 17% of Iceland's total electricity production comes from geothermal energy. Iceland has reached uniquely elevated levels in the employment of geothermal energy, but the resource might be better utilized worldwide. As the temperature drops, proper central heating becomes more and more important.  Ensuring that your central heating system is working correctly should be a top priority for you and your family with a single faulty part capable of ruining your winter holiday season.  There are a number of issues that can surface during the cold winter months.  One common issue is frost damage, which can harm boilers and pipes, preventing them from working efficiently. 

In previous years, the central heating system was designed with the frost thermostat located near the boiler.  Its job was to start the boiler when the air temperature dropped and stop the boiler when the air temperature reached an acceptable level.  If the thermostat detected excessive heat escaping from the boiler or surrounding pipes it quickly turned off the system, in order to conserve energy and prevent excessive heating of the home.

A new development in insulation materials for central heating systems has made the frost thermostat's job much more challenging.  Modern boilers and pipes are much more insulated than their older counterparts.  Energy conservation was the goal of this alteration; unfortunately the problem of overheating persists.  The frost thermostat is no longer able to detect changes in temperature accurately.  As such, overheating and energy waste continue to occur.

Installing a pipe thermostat can solve this problem.  A pipe thermostat is typically placed on the outside of the boiler return pipe, measuring the temperature of the pipe (assuming copper pipes are good heat conductive materials).  Its purpose is to turn off the boiler before overheating occurs.  There are several new products that contain both a frost thermostat and low limit pipe thermostat, providing standard room temperature setting capabilities along with frost protection capabilities.

Installation and set up of these new thermostats is simple and quite intuitive.  Guidelines for complete wiring and installation arrive in the kit, ensuring simple installation.  The frost thermostat is usually set to 5C and the pipe thermostat is commonly set to 25C.  Additional pipe thermostats can be bought for other exposed pipes, to further insure that your system is completely protected.

If the pipe thermostat fails to meet your needs, there are other solutions.  A fully programmable room thermostat is one option.  These devices can be installed in a number of locations throughout your home, usually in a living room or bedroom.  Their job is to measure and monitor the temperature of the room.  The thermostat can be set to change the room temperature several times a day, depending on the homeowner's needs.  There are several kits that operate by means of radio signal, from the thermostat to the boiler.  These Radio Frequency (RF) thermostats require no wiring, which makes them very easy to install.

Thermostats are an important element of your home heating system but, there are other variables that impact your heating efficiency.  By sectioning the home off into zones, waste can be avoided.  The use of zones, allows you to focus the heat where you need it most.  More populated areas can be kept warmer than empty rooms that do not require as much heating.  This minor change can produce great results.  Not only will heating bills be lower but, system efficiency will be greatly improved.

How to find a local Air Conditioning and Heating Repair & Service Contractor.

 

Why Cheap Isn't Cheap - If you have a problem with your air conditioning or heating system you may get advice from acquaintances who suggest someone who does work for a very cheap price. Perhaps this person is a friend of a friend or someone who does the work in their spare time. Take our advice and think very carefully before you let just anyone work on your system. There was a time when you could pull your car under the shade of a tree and almost anyone with mechanical skills could repair it for you. This also used to be true of air conditioning equipment. With today's equipment this is no longer the case. If your air conditioner or heater breaks down you need the services of licensed contractor who has the knowledge, proper tools and equipment, access to the proper parts, and most importantly the experience to do the job right the first time and not leave you in worse shape that when you started. Improper installation and start up can result in early system failure and cause the need for additional maintenance throughout the life of the equipment.

1) Licensed, Insured and Bonded - Make sure any contractor you consider is licensed in the state for the work which you require them to perform. Contractors are required to take tests to prove they have the skills to do the type of work for which they are licensed. Also make sure they carry the proper insurance, including workers compensation and are bonded to insure against damages to your home and property.

2) Make Sure They are Listed - Get a business address and telephone number. Reputable companies will be happy to give out this information. If they don't have a valid business address and proper contact information then they are likely to be gone when warrantee repairs need to be done.

3) Make Sure they Have an EPA License - Make sure any company you deal with has the proper EPA license for the equipment they are servicing. An EPA license is different than a state license and is required to handle refrigerants and to make sure that they are not contaminated and are properly disposed of when removed. (Air Conditioning only)

4) Consider their Business History - When dealing with a contractor ask how long they have been in business. Especially in a smaller community businesses that have been around a while are generally more honest, better trained, and have a reputation for keeping their customers satisfied.

5) Require the Proper Recycling Equipment - Ask what type of recovery system they use for refrigerants. A reputable contractor uses a recycle recovery machine to reclaim any refrigerant which must be removed from the system saving you money and protecting the environment from harmful refrigerants. (Air Conditioning only)

6) Require the Proper Heater Testing Equipment - Ask what type of carbon monoxide detection device they use to determine the safety of your heating system. A reputable service person will use a high quality detection system able to read carbon monoxide or CO down to 1 part per million. (Heating only)

7) Don't be afraid to ask for references. You can also ask friends and family members if they have a company they are happy with but remember to apply the above criteria before making a final decision.

8) Call the Better Business Bureau for a Report. If the company has a complaint on file or they have multiple complaints ask if the percentage of complaints are higher or lower that usual. 1-3 percent of jobs in this field result in a complaint so if the company does hundreds of jobs and only has one or two complaints they may still be acceptable.

9) Check with Local Officials - Check with the building inspector in the area to ask if the company is reputable.
